Virginia's Friendly City is on track to become the state's solar city as Eastern Mennonite University begins construction of its largest solar power plant on its Harrisonburg campus. On August 8, Washington & Lee University signed an agreement with Staunton, Va.-based solar energy developer Solar Energy Systems, to install two photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of approximately 450 kilowatts. The system is being installed at the university as part of a larger partnership between the University of Virginia and Solar Power Systems, Inc., a solar developer based in Stauna, Virginia, and the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSP). The agreement between Washington & Lee University and Solar Energy Systems, LLC was reached in late July after solar panels were installed on the Virginia State University campus by Solar Systems and its parent company SolarPower Systems LLC.
The project does not require upfront costs by the county and ACPS will save its energy costs over the next 20 years by using solar energy, and the figures show an estimated payback and braking time - even a period of less than 10 years. The fact that most customers install solar panels on rooftops or in the field makes them cost-effective. According to Solar Energy Systems, LLC, homeowners report repayment periods of less than ten years.

Smith called EMU's solar project a "significant achievement" compared to relatively other plants in the country, and showed that solar development is encouraged by fewer incentives. Looking a few years into the future, wind's ability to supplement solar power may give wind a better chance of dominating new capacity gains in Virginia than solar power. With the Trump administration's plans to impose tariffs on solar panels in 2018, it is not hard to see that the price of solar panels in Virginia will fall by 2021. But, given the low cost of solar energy and the lack of incentives for new solar plants, solar power will need taxpayer subsidies to thrive.
While the low price of solar energy will lead to energy suppliers increasing their share of the energy mix, the difficulty of planning and supplying solar energy could be overcome by rapid commissioning and decommissioning of natural gas plants and by the lower cost of renewables.
These factors can affect the price, but the actual savings are strongly determined by the cost of installing a solar system in your home.
